Sustainable Development

 Press Article - RTBF 02/19/2019

The Gîte Spa Les Estinnes has been committed to an "eco-responsible" approach since its inception and decided to formalize this by obtaining the "Green Key" eco-label at the end of 2018.

Our membership will expire on December 31, 2022, as the overly theoretical criteria only partially reflect our approach.

The Gîte Spa les Estinnes will, however, maintain the requirements and criteria previously acquired under this eco-label.

Environmental statement

As the owner of Gîte Spa les Estinnes, we are committed to ensuring environmentally and socially responsible management, as well as limiting the impact of our activities on the environment.

Respect for the environment and our social responsibility are essential components of the gîte's missions.

The Gîte Spa les Estinnes complies with environmental and social legislation, as well as the requirements that apply in the Walloon Region, but we want to go further.

  • We monitor water and energy consumption within our establishment, in order to continually improve our infrastructure/equipment and ensure more economical management based on this data.
  • We are committed to reducing our waste production and limiting our impact on air, water and soil as part of our environmental policy, through an effective management system.
  •  We raise awareness among our guests so that they contribute to respecting the environment.
  •  Our lodge respects legislation on town planning and regional development, the rights of local residents and communities, local natural and cultural heritage, the health and quality of life of local residents, as well as access to resources for local people.
  •  We do not offer for sale, display or participate in the trade of endangered or protected species and historical or archaeological objects, except as permitted by law.
  • Our establishment assures its guests that they will be welcomed without any form of discrimination related to disability, social status, nationality, religion or sexual orientation.
  • Gîte les Estinnes is committed to informing its guests and involving them so that they contribute to the implementation of its environmental and social policy.

Eco-responsible accommodation

Here are some of our commitments and actions to ensure you receive eco-responsible accommodation that combines comfort and respect for nature:

To limit our impact on water:

  • We use eco-certified cleaning and laundry products.
  • We wash bed linen (mattress protectors, pillowcases, and sheets at a maximum of 30°C on a short cycle). We dry the laundry outside when the weather permits.
  • The faucets and showers are equipped with water savers.

To limit energy consumption:

  • We monitor our water and electricity consumption every month.
  • Photovoltaic panels provide a large part of the electricity needs.
  • Lighting is provided by a maximum of energy-saving (LED) or low-consumption lamps.
  • We use a pellet stove for the main heating and the temperature of the house is automatically set to 20-21° in winter (except for winter exceptions).
  • The building (wooden frame) is very well insulated.

To limit waste:

  • The Gîte has, in addition to the usual sorting bins for your waste, places provided for the collection of batteries, stoppers (cork, metal, plastic), peelings (compost), food scraps (laying hens in the garden).

To preserve biodiversity:

  • The garden is maintained exclusively using ecological products and is watered only in the evening or early in the morning.
  • A large insect hotel (2019 project) and birdhouses are installed in the garden.
  • The result of our compost is used for the vegetable garden and our plantations.

To encourage sustainable development:

  • In our purchases, we ensure that we favor local productions or those which have the lowest impact on the environment.
  • We are looking for companies or traders who promote local labor, or who take the social dimension into account.

For your trips and walks:

  • The cottage is labeled "Bienvenue Vélo"
